Neighbor charged with murder, rape of Jersey Bridgeman, 6

-->

Zachary Holly, the Arkansas man charged Wednesday with the rape and murder of 6-year-old Jersey Bridgeman, had been babysitting the little girl the night before her disappearance, as he had many times before, according to a court document released after his first hearing Wednesday.
Jersey's death came just months after a high-profile child abuse case in which her father and stepmother, David Bridgeman and Jana Bridgeman, convicted of chaining the girl to a dresser at night. Jana Bridgeman is serving a 12-year prison sentence, plus three years for a probation revocation. David Bridgeman is serving an 18-year prison sentence.
Jersey had since moved in with her mother, DesaRae Bridgeman, and began kindergarten this fall in Bentonville, about 215 miles northwest of Little Rock. They lived next door to Zachary Holly, 28, and his wife Amanda, friends of the family who frequently babysat Jersey and her 2-year-old sister, as they did on Nov. 19, according to interviews described in the affidavit of probable cause released Wednesday.
When DesaRae came home from work at about 11 that night, she went to get the girls, and after she chatted with the Hollys for a few minutes, Zachary carried Jersey to her home, while DesaRae carried the younger sister — and they placed them in the same bed, the document says.
Jersey was reported missing the morning of Nov. 20. Minutes after a search for her began, Jersey's body was discovered in an abandoned house two doors away.
The probable cause document released to the public is heavily redacted, but it reveals that the crime lab in Bentonville worked through the Thanksgiving holiday to develop a DNA profile from sperm cells found on Jersey's body.
Holly called Bentonville police on Nov. 23, according to the affidavit, and later showed up at a station, gave a statement — the details of which are entirely blacked out in the document — and then was booked on charges of capital murder, kidnapping, rape and residential burglary.
In Wednesday's hearing at the First Circuit Court in Bentonville, Ark., he was denied bond

One neighbor, Julie Pickard, told The Associated Press Tuesday that Holly wept the day Jersey's body was found. "He was crying for a long time," said Pickard. The fact that Jersey was abused by parental figures and a neighbor is suspected in her death fits into an unfortunate pattern, according to Beverly Engle executive director of the Children’s Advocacy Center of Benton County in Arkansas.
"Ninety-six percent of people who offend on children are people that the child knows. We all have been so trained in the stranger-danger aspect, which certainly does happen, but I think the reality is that’s about 4 percent," said Engle, who interviewed Jersey last year when allegations of abuse against her father and stepmother surfaced.
"Jersey was a precious, adorable child and it is very grieving to know even in the moments before her death what she may have experienced, knowing this person or trusting this person,” Engle said.
'A little old soul': Girl found dead after dad, stepmom jailed
Holly is being held in Benton County Jail, and on Tuesday was attacked by another inmate, jail Capt. Chris Sparks told The AP Wednesday. He said Holly wasn't seriously injured, and that the other inmate, who was in jail on a parole violation, could face charges.
"Obviously this case has gotten a lot of exposure in the media and all the inmates know what he's in for ..." Sparks said. "We're going to do our best to try and keep him safe, just like we do every other inmate."
Holly was not required to speak at the hearing, and KARK reported that he remained silent as his lawyers, including public defender Jay Saxton, asked to review the decision to deny bond.

Powerball winning numbers

New York News | NYC Breaking News

MYFOXNY.COM/AP - The winning numbers for the November 28, 2012, Powerball multistate lottery are: 5 16 22 23 29 ; Powerball 6 With strong last-minute sales, the record jackpot swelled to an estimated $580 million. ---- CHICAGO (AP) -- The richest Powerball jackpot ever -- and the second-largest top prize in U.S. lottery history -- has been won. The question now becomes: Who are the lucky winners waking up to new lives as multimillionaires? Powerball officials said early Thursday morning that tickets sold in Arizona and Missouri matched all six numbers to win the record $579.9 million jackpot. The numbers drawn Wednesday night are: 5, 16, 22, 23, 29 and Powerball of 6. In New Jersey, eight of the tickets matched five numbers to win $1 million. The lottery says 450,781 tickets in New Jersey are worth something. Some 239,159 matched just the Powerball and are worth $4. It was not clear whether the winning tickets belonged to individuals or were purchased by groups. Arizona lottery officials said early Thursday morning they had no information on that state's winner or winners but would announce where it was sold during a news conference later in the day. Lottery officials in Missouri did not immediately respond to phone messages and emails seeking comment. Americans went on a ticket-buying spree in the run-up to Wednesday's drawing, the big money enticing many people who rarely, if ever, play the lottery to purchase a shot at the second-largest payout in U.S. history. Tickets were selling at a rate of 130,000 a minute nationwide -- about six times the volume from a week ago. That pushed the jackpot even higher before the Wednesday night drawing, said Chuck Strutt, executive director of the Multi-State Lottery Association. A lottery official said late Wednesday that the jackpot increased to $579.9 million by the time of the drawing, making the cash option $379.8 million. Among those hoping to win was Lamar Fallie, a jobless Chicago man who said his six tickets conjured a pleasant daydream: If he wins, he plans to take care of his church, make big donations to schools and then "retire from being unemployed." The jackpot had already rolled over 16 consecutive times without a winner, but Powerball officials said earlier Wednesday they believed there was a 75 percent chance the winning combination will be drawn this time. Some experts had predicted that if one ticket hit the right numbers, chances were good that multiple ones would. That happened in the Mega Millions drawing in March, when three ticket buyers shared a $656 million jackpot, which remains the largest lottery payout of all time. And it happened again for Wednesday's Powerball drawing. Yvette Gavin, who sold the tickets to Fallie, is only an occasional lottery player herself, but the huge jackpot means she'll definitely play this time. As for the promises she often gets from ticket purchasers, Gavin isn't holding her breath. "A lot of customers say if they win they will take care of me, but I will have to wait and see," she said. In the hours before Wednesday's drawing, Associated Press photographers across the nation sought out ticket buyers and asked about their lottery fantasies. Here's a look at what they found: ------ When Atlanta barber Andre Williams buys scratch-off tickets, he typically does a dance in his shop for good luck. As a first-time Powerball player, he plans to reprise the dance -- and buy a few extra tickets to enhance his chances. "I don't even know if I'll look at it," said Williams, who bought his ticket at a newsstand. "If I win, I might pass out." Paralegal Pat Powell was buying her first Powerball ticket at another store in Atlanta, even though she acknowledged her odds were probably "zero to zero." Still, Powell has specific plans should she win: start an Internet cafe in the West Indies and a learning center in Georgia. "I've been thinking about winning this money and what I'd do with it," Powell said. "There's no ritual, but it's just been on my mind. So it's like, let me just join the hype and just do it." Atlanta accountant Benita Lewis, who had never played the lottery before, didn't want to be the only one left in her office without a ticket. "I did feel nervous buying it like I could be the one," she said. "I'm going to retire and pay off all my family's debt." ------ In Philadelphia, seafood salesman Billy Fulginiti bought 50 Powerball tickets with co-workers and a few more with a small group. He said he only plays when the jackpot is especially large. "You go to bed at night wishing you wake up a millionaire," Fulginiti said. He planned to take a long vacation and "help a lot of people, a lot of charities," if any of his tickets turn out to be winners. ------ Powerball purchases at the Canterbury Country Store in Canterbury, N.H., have been so steady that the manager has been working extra evening hours to keep up. Horticulturist Kevin Brags buys tickets at the store two to three times a month. He says he usually picks numbers higher than 32 because so many people use numbers 31 and lower, largely because of birthdays. The birthday theory didn't scare off Paul Kruzel, a retired doctor who chooses the days his children were born. Both, however, have the same plans for winning: "make a lot of people happy." John Olson has a more elaborate idea: He'd like to buy an island. ------ At a downtown Detroit convenience store, Ceejay Johnson purchased five Powerball tickets. If she strikes it rich, the analyst from Southfield, Mich., said she would buy a home for her sister in Florida. Then she would "go into hiding" and take care of her family. "And the IRS," she added. DeKalb police charge sister in death of 2-year-old girl

New York News | NYC Breaking News

DEKALB COUNTY - DeKalb County police say they have charged a 13-year-old sister in the murder of 2-year-old Sasha Lamaya Ray on Tuesday. Ray's body was found behind her home on Monday. Hours after family members found the body of the body of the child outside the family's home, the worst fears of family members were confirmed when police charged the child's 13-year-old sister, Tyasia Jackson, with murder. She has been charged as an adult. "At this point, our detectives believe the cause of death was multiple stab wounds to the chest of the 2-year-old. They believe the 13-year-old attacked the child inside the home and then carried the body outside where it was discovered by her father," said Mekka Parrish of DeKalb County police. Police say the 13-year-old was babysitting Sasha and several other siblings when the teen allegedly stabbed the child. "The only indication that they have is that the 13-year-old was upset prior to the attack on the 2-year-old. What she was upset about has not been determined. They're still working on how long the children were in the care of the 13-year-old prior to the family's arrival," said Parrish. Police say they believe the two girls are half-sisters, having the same mother but different fathers. As police continue to investigate, the family continues to mourn the loss of a toddler who just celebrated her second birthday. "I know my daughter's gone to heaven and I still need to do what I need to do to make it to where she is because she's in a better place than I am," said the child's father, Shelton Latroy Ray. Shortly after the incident on Monday, Shelton Ray told reporters he would help the 13-year-old in spite of the charges against her and as he continues to mourn the loss of her half-sister. "If I could say anything to Tyasia, all I would say is Tyasia , what you did is wrong and they're going to be some consequences you have to face and you're going to have to face them. We're going to help you along the way while you're facing those consequences," said Shelton Ray. The teen was brought before a judge on Tuesday and remains jailed. Police chief busts alleged burglar on morning jog

New York News | NYC Breaking News

DALTON, Ga. - A recent morning jog turned into a crime-fighting opportunity for Dalton Police Chief Jason Parker. While he was out for a pre-turkey run on Thanksgiving morning, he nabbed a burglary suspect, who couldn't outrun the chief. Chief Parker says he's an avid jogger, and he credits his physical conditioning with helping him get the job done. He says he noticed the man cutting across a yard, and putting down some items outside a work shed. He could see the suspect, but the suspect couldn't see him. He says when the man emerged with more items, he asked a couple who was walking by to call 911. Then, Chief Parker confronted the alleged burglar, who took off on foot, throwing what he was carrying along the way. Chief Parker bolted after the man, who scaled one fence but couldn't get over the second one. He says his athletic ability helped him keep the suspect in sight, and eventually catch up to him. According to the police report, Chief Parker used a golf club as a police baton to help subdue the suspect, 48-year-old Thomas Green. A couple of squad cars arrived a short time later to take Green to jail. Then, Chief Parker says he finished his morning jog. Chief Parker, who is the same age as the suspect, takes it all in stride. He said any of his officers would have done the same thing. Read more: http://www.myfoxny.com/story/20201164/police-chief-busts-alleged-burglar-on-morning-jog#ixzz2DcVNneSY

Police: Irate man hit female Steak n' Shake manager in face Read more: http://www.myfoxny.com/story/19846457/irate-man-hit-steak-shake-n-manager#ixzz2DcUBJAh7

New York News | NYC Breaking News

Dalton police say they're looking for a man who is accused of hitting the female manager of a Steak n' Shake restaurant in the face, and they're asking for the public's help in finding him. Police say the incident happened on September 29 shortly after 1:00 a.m. at the Steak n' Shake on West Walnut Avenue in Dalton. The suspect-- who was described by witnesses as a heavyset older white male with thinning brown hair who was wearing sweat pants and a gray t-shirt with sandals-- walked up to the front counter asking to speak to a manager. Investigators say the man then walked around to the entrance to the grill area, at the same time speaking loudly about the lack of service he'd received. When the manager asked him to step out of the employee-only area of the restaurant to make his complaint, the suspect hit her in the face with a stack of papers which were believed to be restaurant coupons. After the incident, the man walked out of the restaurant and drove out of the parking lot backwards, in an apparent attempt to keep witnesses or cameras from seeing his license plate. Police say the suspect then left the parking lot driving backwards onto Tibbs Road in a gray four-door vehicle, possibly an Oldsmobile. $550 Million Florida Powerball Drawing is Tonight and the winning numbers are!!

A half billion dollars could be yours tonight in the Powerball drawing.
The $550 million Powerball numbers will be drawn tonight sending the country and Florida in another jackpot craze. The estimated jackpot grew another $50 million Wednesday as more and more people bought tickets.
There are plenty of ups and downs to winning (or trying to win) the Powerball lottery in Florida.
Florida has the third highest active lottery sales in the nation and leads in Powerball wins, the Sun-Sentinel reports:
"We've led the nation since we added Powerball in 2009, both in winners and in sales," the Florida Lottery's Shelly Gerteisen said.
However, when it comes to hitting the jackpot in Florida, the chances goes way down. Only four people have hit the Powerball jackpot in Florida, according to a Powerball analysis website. Florida joined Powerball in 2009 and the multi-state lottery has had 53 winners since then. Indiana leads in jackpot wins with 19 followed by Pennsylvania at 15.
Second place isn't a bad consolation prize, though. Florida has had 159 second-prize Powerball winners, according to the Powerball analysis site.
Lottery anaylsis website USA Mega broke down what you could expect to take home after taxes in the $550 million jackpot state by state.
For Florida, you do not have a state lottery tax nor an income tax, so it's just the federal taxes that will come your way. The site says your one-time payout would be $270,150,000.
Take the 30-year annuity payments, and it's $412.5 million, bringing home $13.75 million each year, according to USA Mega.
Given that Florida is relatively lucky, do you have a favorite store to buy your lotto tickets where you feel extra lucky?

feeding a giraffe at silver springs

WE WERE AT SILVER SPRINGS AND DECIDED TO FEED THE GIRAFFE

The giraffe is one of only two living species of the family Giraffidae, the other being the okapi. The family was once much more extensive, with over 10 fossil genera described. Giraffids first arose 8 million years ago (mya) in south-central Europe during the Miocene epoch. The superfamily Giraffoidea, together with the family Antilocapridae (whose only extant species is the pronghorn), evolved from the extinct family Palaeomerycidae.[11] The earliest known giraffid was the deer-like Climacoceras.

While the progressive elongation of the neck and limbs can be found throughout the giraffid lineage, it became more pronounced in genera such as Giraffokeryx, Palaeotragus, Samotherium and Bohlinia.[11] Bohlinia entered China and northern India in response to climate change. From here, the genus Giraffa evolved and, around 7 mya, entered Africa.[11] Further climate changes caused the extinction of the Asian giraffes, while the African ones survived and radiated into several new species. G. camelopardalis arose around 1 mya in eastern Africa during the Pleistocene.[11] Some biologists suggest that the modern giraffe descended from G. jumae;[12] others find G. gracilis a more likely candidate.[11] It is believed that the main driver for the evolution of the giraffes were the changes from extensive forests to more open habitats, which began 8 mya.[11]

The giraffe was one of the many species first described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758. He gave it the binomial name Cervus camelopardalis in the 10th edition of his Systema Naturae.[13] Morten Thrane BrĂ¼nnich classified the genus Giraffa in 1772.[14] In the early 19th century, Jean-Baptiste Lamarck believed that the giraffe's long neck was an "acquired characteristic", developed as generations of ancestral giraffes strived to reach the leaves of tall trees.[15] This theory was eventually rejected, and scientists now believe that the giraffe's neck arose through Darwinian natural selection—that ancestral giraffes with long necks thereby had a competitive advantage that better enabled them to reproduce and pass on their genes.

HOW TO BUILD A mosquito trap

Get a large 2 liter Coke/Pepsi/Fanta, etc plastic soda bottle. Take the cap off and throw away.

Just below the point where the neck of the bottle straightens out onto the body of the bottle, cut it across. So now you have a funnel and a cylinder.

Invert the funnel into the cylinder. It should fit snugly. A piece of tape will seal it, but may not be necessary.

Fill about 1/3 of the cylinder part with a mixture of dry yeast, warm water, and honey (or sugar). Use about 1 Tablespoon of yeast (This is about 1 package of yeast bought at the local grocery and often used to make bread or rolls). Make the water just at the temperature where it is only warm to your soft skin. Like babies milk. Use about 1/3 or so Cup of sugar or honey. Mix all together and pour into the funnel/cylinder.

The trap works by creating CO2 with the sugar/yeast mixture. This gas escapes and is seen by the bugs as attractive. They will fly into the trap and then get stuck to the sugar coated sides or just wear themselves out trying to find an exit.

Change the yeast/sugar/water mixture about every two weeks or so.
